Found in a wide variety of habitats near human habitation, such as mangroves, agricultural areas, plantations, gardens and urban areas. 28 cm. The most common resident kingfisher throughout Malaysia.

Found on short grass such as airfields and golf courses. 16 cm. Range: India and S China through Indo-Malaysia, Singapore, Sumatra, Borneo, Java, the Philippines and Lesser Sundra.

Predominantly in mangroves, and open ground with fairly close trees that provide sites for foraging insects; migrants tend to occur more in parkland and gardens. 28 cm. Resident from Afghanistan eastwards through S China and Southeast Asia to Palawan, Borneo, Java, Bali and Lombok; migrant to Southeast Asia, including Peninsula Malaysia and Singapore.

Found in open broad-leaved evergreen and deciduous forest, peat swamps, bamboo; up to 1,525 m. Common resident throughout SE Asia except Thailand.

Found in the canopy of evergreen rainforest in the extreme lowlands, extending up hill slopes only on some off-shore islands. 29 cm. Resident on Peninsula Malaysia.

Found in middle storey and canopy of forests' often occurs down to lower levels in forest and forest edges, from sea-level up to 900 m. 19 cm. Resident from S Myanmar and Peninsula Thailand to Malaysia and Singapore, Sumatra and Borneo.
