Common in primary and secondary forests, forest edges, scrub, old plantations, occasionally in gardens and mangroves. 13 cm. Distribution: Himalayan foothills and NE India, S China, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay peninsula, Sumatra.

Common resident, but victim to the pet trade and wide populations may be from escapees; secondary forests, forest edges, old plantations, scrub, mangroves and parkland, including urban areas. 11 cm. Distribution: much of Indian sub-continent, mainland Southeast Asia, Thai-Malay Peninsula, Greater Sundas.

Migrant to coastal mudflats, sandy beaches, tidal ponds. 24 cm. Breeds across N Eurasia, from Scandinavia and much of Russia to E Siberia; winters along coast of Africa, Middle East, Indian sub-continent, east to S China, Southeast Asia and Australia.
