EASTERN GROUND PARROT

Campbell, Wood and Leseberg, Birds of Australia say: "usually seen flying low over heath after being flushed". This was the only photograph I managed after flushing the Ground Parrot. Photographed at Barron Grounds, NSW July 2015

Also called Button-grass or Swamp Parrot. 28-32 cm. Found in coastal heaths, swampy areas, drier ridges, burned areas in same; nearby grasslands. In Tas. button-grass, moorlands. Range: from ne. of Gympie, and Fraser Is. (Q) to e. and s. Vic. (formerly se SA); widespread w. and sw. Tas. .

Also known as Brown Bristlebird. 20-22 cm. Range: coastal se. Aust., scattered, isolated populations, from c. Marlo (e. Vic) to Cooloola NP and Conondale Ra., c. 100 km n. of Brisbane (Q). Found in coastal woodlands, dense scrubs and heathlands, especially wheeler heathland borders taller woodland or dense tall tea-tree. In McPherson Ras. (Q), heathy country above 600 m and open areas with gullies and ridges vegetated with dense Poa tussocks, near tall open eucalypt woodland, rainforest. Fire makes habitat unsuitable in short term but probably necessary for long term. Rare and vulnerable.

Found in rainforest margins/regrowth; dense scrubs on streams; paperbarks; mangroves, adjacent eucalypt forest. 13-14 cm. Range: coastal e. Aust. and mountains of Gt Divide; forested coastal islands: from C. York (Q), s. to c. Iluka (ne. NSW); casual Crowdy Bay NP (n. of Harrington, NSW). Uncommon to rare in s. ; more common coastal than on highlands. Probable autumn-winter migration from highlands to coastal lowlands.

Also known as Spectacled Flycatcher. 14-16 cm. Found in understory of mountain/lowland rainforests; thickly wooded gullies; waterslide vegetation; mostly well below canopy. Range: coastal ne. and e. Aust. and coastal islands, from Cape York (Q) s. to Watson River on w. coast and to Port Stephens (NSW) on e. coast. Resident s. to Rockhampton; summer breeding migrant to se Q-ne. NSW, from Sept-Oct., to May. Common in humid ne. Q, elsewhere uncommon in suitable habitat.

Also known as Flock Pigeon. 40-46 cm. Found in rainforests, palms, native figs; nearby eucalyptus forrest, woodlands; fruiting trees in open country; orchards, e.g. cherries. Range: coastal e. Aust., from Cape York to far s. coast NSW, on and e. of Divide. Fairly common from Atherton Tableland (ne Q) to ce. NSW; scarce n. of Cooktown; casual far e. Victoria to Mallacoota Region; Gippsland Lakes and Tas. unprecedented numbers (flocks to c. 40)nine the dry summer of 1994-95. Movement influenced by the availability otr lack of rainforest fruits.

 11.5-13 cm. Found in tropical, temperate rainforests, from sea-level to c. 1500 m. Range: coastal e. Aust.,  from Kingsgate NP, ne. of Melbourne (Vic) to near Cooktown (Q); inland to c. Tenterfield (NSW)-Chinchilla (Q). In se. Aust.,  n. to c. Shoalwater Bay (Q) from sea-level to c. 1000 m. From Euungella NP n. to near Cooktown, mostly in high rainforests.

28-33 cm, male larger.  Found in rainforests mainly in mountains/foothills; nearby wetter eucalypt forests; paperbark woodlands; occasionally open woodlands. Range: mostly in highland forests of Gt Dividing Range to c. 1200 m: Calliope Ra. s. of Gladstone (Q) (isolated population); and from Cooroy-Nanango-Bunya Mt NP )Q), s. to upper Williams R.-Barrington Tops NP-Gloucester Tops (NSW); casual s. to Dungog-Mt Royal  near Singleton (NSW); inland on Dividing Ra. exceptionally to Gibraltar Ra. NP-Murrundi. Fairly common, uncommon in s. of range.
